Adieu

Disable Bonjour in OS X

Bonjour enables automatic discovery of computers, devices, and services on IP networks. It is a great feature in most situations. However, on large networks such as a data center or college campus, it can become quite noisy and a drain on CPU and battery.

Adieu is a script that will disable bonjour advertisements from your machine. In other words, you won't show up in the Finder or Server Admin of other Macs on the network. This script will not disable Bonjour queries or DNS, which is important to keep your Mac behaving well on a network and online. (See Apple KB article HT3789)

With the help of Stephan Peterson, we've made it a real simple, one window process. The script will recognize which OS you're using (10.5 and 10.6 are supported), make a backup of the original plist, and prompt you according to the current state of Bonjour. (eg, enable or disable)

You're welcome to use and distribute this script freely, but please don't change it. Be sure to check with your network admin if you have questions on the use of the script.

You can download the Adieu script here. (We've moved the download for now. There have been a couple reports of machines that don't boot. Seems it may be a service better left enabled. We'll report back.)
